Design Thinking Workshop for Bavarian Research and Innovation Agency
I was invited by Sabine Toussaint, executive director Bavarian Research Alliance ForDemocracy, Dr. Guenther Weiß, Director Liaison Office Research Alliances and Dr. Susanne Schmitt, executive director Bavarian Research Alliance ForGenderCare to conceive an innovation workshop for the Bavarian Research and Innovation Agency. The aim was to introduce members of staff to a Design Thinking approach to decision making and problem solving in order to develop fresh approaches and new thinking with regards to problems of interdisciplinary dialogue, communication and knowledge transfer within the Bavarian Research Alliances during joint research projects.
I provided a concise, yet highly informative presentation about the key drivers behind Design Thinking as an innovation culture and as a set of effective innovation methods. Approx. 40 highly motivated participants explored diverse visual approaches, thinking in semantics and storytelling and using a combination of Lego Serious Play and a range of other tactile materials to prototype and test their ideas. At the end of the workshop the learnings of the day and the developed concepts for problems within the realm of interdisciplinary dialogue, communication and knowledge transfer within the Bavarian Research Alliances were discusses. The workshop feedback was very positive and the participants expressed their wish to continue working on the topics in order to develop them further.
Dr. Susanne Schmitt:
“The magnificent workshop brought us closer to concrete problem solutions. Particularly, it demonstrated ways and means how people can reach out to others and interact playfully and in an unbiased manner across disciplines and levels of hierarchy in order to successfully work together on joint problems. The moderation, know-how and atmosphere were utmost coherent and convincing.” Dr. Susanne Schmitt, executive director Bavarian Research Alliance ForGenderCare
